¡Hola, amigos! In this post, I’ll give a brief explanation of what an adverb is. At the end of the post, you’ll find a list to help you start learning or refresh your knowledge of Spanish adverbs. Let’s get started!
WHAT IS AN ADVERB?
An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, another adverb, or even an entire sentence. It provides additional information about how, when, where, or to what degree something happens or is described. For example, words like “quickly,” “very,” “yesterday,” and “fortunately” are adverbs because they add detail to actions, qualities, or situations. Unlike adjectives, adverbs do not change according to gender or number—they remain the same regardless of the noun or verb they modify. Examples:
1. Adverb modifying a verb:
Ella corre rápidamente.
(She runs quickly.)
2. Adverb modifying an adjective:
El libro es muy interesante.
(The book is very interesting.)
3. Adverb modifying another adverb:
Habla extremadamente rápido.
(He speaks extremely fast.)
4. Adverb modifying an entire sentence:
Afortunadamente, llegamos a tiempo.
(Fortunately, we arrived on time.)
