Hey, so here’s the deal with the Spanish word América.
In English, we often use America to mean the United States. But in Spanish, it’s a bit broader. América covers North, Central, and South America – the whole shebang.
Thing is, because of history and politics, some folks in Latin America get touchy if you only use América to talk about the United States. It’s like, “Hold up, we’re part of América too!”
So, to sidestep any drama, when talking about the U.S., it’s smoother to use terms like Estados Unidos (United States) or Norteamérica (North America). Same goes for calling someone americano (American) – instead, you’re better off saying estadounidense or norteamericano.
