The subjunctive progressive present is the progressive present when we add a subjunctive trigger.
Let’s see how it works. The following sentence is a fact, so it’s in the indicative mood:
Juan is enjoying his holidays.
Juan está disfrutando sus vacaciones.
Now, if we add a subjunctive trigger, the sentence becomes subjunctive:
I hope Juan is enjoying his holidays.
Espero que Juan esté disfrutando sus vacaciones.
It’s really easy. You know that esperar (to hope) is a subjunctive trigger in Spanish.
In English, the structure is really the same in both the indicative and subjunctive versions.
However, in Spanish, it’s a little different. In the subjunctive version, the verb estar must go in the present subjunctive. So, in this case, instead of está (indicative mood) we must use esté (subjunctive mood).
And that’s all!! Enough theory for now. Exercises will be coming soon!
