¡Hola, beginners!
John, a passionate American, has devoted the last two years to mastering the Spanish language. Recently, he had a brilliant idea – he decided to travel to the vibrant Mexico City to fully immerse himself in the language and soak up the city’s unique atmosphere. Despite being somewhat shy, he’s determined to conquer his fear of initiating conversations with strangers. How? By heading to a charming bar, ordering a coffee, and striking up a conversation with the waitress. This brave move will give him the chance to practice introducing himself in Spanish and chat about his job, hobbies, and more. Let’s eavesdrop on this exciting dialogue:
John: ¡Hola! Buenas tardes. Quiero un café, por favor.(Hello! Good afternoon. I want a coffee, please.) Sofía: ¿Con leche o negro?
(With milk or black?) John: Con leche, por favor. Soy un turista. Es mi primera vez en México.
(With milk, please. I’m a tourist. It’s my first time in Mexico.) Sofía: ¡Qué bueno! ¿De dónde eres?
(How nice! Where are you from?) John: Soy de Estados Unidos. Quiero practicar mi español. El bar está vacío. ¿Podemos hablar cinco minutos?
(I am from the United States. I want to practice my Spanish. The bar is empty. Can we talk for five minutes?) Sofía: ¡Sí! Tu acento es muy bueno. Suenas como un nativo. Veamos… ¿Cuántos años tienes?
(Yes! Your accent is very good. You sound like a native. Let’s see… How old are you?)
John: Tengo 25 años. ¿Y tú?
(I am 25 years old. And you?)
Sofía: Tengo 28 años. ¿Dónde trabajas?
(I am 28 years old. Where do you work?)
John: Trabajo en California. Soy ingeniero.
(I work in California. I am an engineer.)
Sofía: ¿Dónde estudias español?
(Where do you study Spanish?)
John: Estudio en línea con Martín, un profesor de Argentina.
(I study online with Martín, a teacher from Argentina.)
Sofía: ¡Fantástico!
(Fantastic!)
(Where do you live?)
Sofía: Vivo cerca de aquí.
(I live near here.)
John: Yo estoy en un hotel en el centro de la ciudad.
(I’m at a hotel in the city center.)
(What do you like to do?)
John: Me gusta leer y viajar. ¿Qué hay de ti?
(I like to read and travel. What about you?)
Sofía: Me gusta escuchar música, bailar y salir con amigos.
(I like to listen to music, to dance and to go out with friends.)
John: ¡Genial! ¿Qué tipo de música te gusta?
(Great! What type of music do you like?)
Sofía: Me gusta el rock. ¿Qué hay de ti?
(I like rock music. What about you?)
John: Yo escucho salsa en español.
(I listen to salsa in Spanish.)
Sofía: ¡Buena elección!
(Good choice!)
John: Gracias. ¿Cuál es tu nombre?
(Thank you. What’s your name?)
Sofía: Mi nombre es Sofía. ¿Y tu nombre?
(My name is Sofía. And your name?)
John: Mi nombre es John.
(My name is John.)
Sofía: Mucho gusto, John.
(Nice to meet you, John.)
(Same here, Sofía. Thank you for your time!)
